Europe from 11,250 miles: This month’s Flying Blue Promo Rewards

Editor’s note: This is a recurring post, regularly updated with new information.

From paid ticket sales to redemption promotions, there are endless opportunities to book travel at a discount.

However, few sales are as reliable as the Promo Rewards we see each month from Air France-KLM Flying Blue.

These deals regularly appear on the Flying Blue website and offer discounts on flights to and from select cities or region pairs. All discounts are only bookable through the end of the month, and there’s always a set travel window.

This month, we’re seeing one-way economy flights between the U.S. and Europe for as little as 11,250 Flying Blue miles plus applicable taxes and fees. You can earn Flying Blue miles by transferring rewards from various transferable points programs, so let’s take a closer look at this deal.

The deal

Best cards for paying the taxes and fees: The Platinum Card® from American Express (5 points per dollar on airfare booked directly with the airline or through Amex Travel, on up to $500,000 on these purchases per calendar year), Citi Premier® Card (3 points per dollar on air travel), Chase Sapphire Reserve (3 points per dollar on travel), American Express® Gold Card (3 points per dollar on airfare when booked directly with the airline or through Amex Travel) or Chase Sapphire Preferred Card (2 points per dollar on travel).

Promo Rewards between North America and Europe

This month, you’ll find discounted economy award tickets between seven North American airports and Europe. These discounted awards start at just 11,250 miles each way, although you’ll also need to pay taxes and fees on your award.

The cheapest awards are to or from New York, but there are also published economy deals to or from Chicago, Miami, Washington, Houston, Los Angeles and Atlanta.

AIRFRANCE.FR

On the West Coast, Promo Rewards from Los Angeles are the lowest priced at 20,250 miles one-way in economy.

KLM.NL

Even though most long-haul Air France and KLM flights operate to Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS), you can connect to many other European destinations.

You might even want to connect, as we found numerous dates where it costs fewer miles than the advertised price to connect. For example, you can consistently book a flight from Los Angeles to Oslo Airport (OSL) for 18,000 miles instead of the advertised 20,250 miles.

KLM.COM

Additionally, we consistently found flights from Atlanta to Paris pricing less than expected. While the Promo Rewards pricing for one-way flights from Atlanta to Paris should be 22,500 miles, we found many instances where these flights cost 15,750 miles.

KLM.COM

TPG values Flying Blue miles at 1.2 cents each, meaning you could spend at little as $270 worth of Flying Blue miles for a round-trip economy flight to Europe. However, one downside is that Flying Blue tickets have moderate taxes and fees. So compare the total award cost to the cost of a cash ticket before booking.

You must book these Promo Rewards tickets by Nov. 30, 2022, but they are valid for travel through April 30, 2023. You can change or cancel Promo Rewards booked on June 29, 2022, or later by paying a fee of 50 euros (about $49).

How to book

You can book Flying Blue Promo Rewards like any other Flying Blue award ticket. ZACH GRIFF/THE POINTS GUY

Book Promo Rewards tickets on the Air France or KLM website. Log in to your account and click the “Book with Miles” tab on the home screen. Then, enter your desired itinerary and click the orange search button.

Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport had fairly good availability throughout the remainder of the year when we searched.

If you plan to transfer rewards to book this award, find award space first and then transfer. After all, you never want to transfer points until you know there’s bookable award space.

Earning Flying Blue miles

Fortunately, it’s easy to boost your Flying Blue balance since the program partners with many major transferable points currencies.

You can transfer points at a 1:1 ratio from American Express Membership Rewards, Bilt Rewards, Capital One, Chase Ultimate Rewards and Citi ThankYou Rewards. You can also transfer Marriott points at a 3:1 ratio, with a 5,000-mile bonus for every 60,000 points you transfer.

Based on our tests, Amex, Bilt, Capital One, Chase and Citi transfers should post instantly. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case with our test transfer from Marriott, which took three days to arrive in our Flying Blue account. In other words, credit card points are your best bet if you’re hoping to book right away.
